Workers in Bayelsa State-owned Cargo International Airport, have decried the non-payment of their monthly salaries and allowances by the Governor Seriake Dickson led administration since April this year, Our Bayelsa State Correspondent reports.
Some of the workers who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimization, said the issue of non-payment of their salaries and allowances started after the state government removed Captain Henry Ungbuku as the Managing Director of Cargo International Airport and replaced him with Captain Jeri William.
According to them, Capt. William has been advocating for employment of 60 percent of non-indigenes and 40 percent of indigenes, which is believed to be against the people's wish in the state.
They alleged that the current Managing Director refused to honor an invitation by the host communities few days ago, which led to a peaceful protest and ultimately stopped the contractors handling the operational fence from working.
According to the workers, the Airport being an agency of the state government operates a separate account and the four months’ salaries and allowances have been paid through the state treasury.
"Why the nonchalant attitude of our leadership as to when commercial flight will take off? When would they complete the operational fence and round off the tower for full blown activities? When will our salaries will be paid"?, the workers asked.
As at the time of this report, efforts by Our Bayelsa State Correspondent to speak with Captain Jeri William, were futile as his mobile phone lines could not be reached.
