The Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Isenah has been controversially impeached, without the mace, by majority members loyal to Gov. Dickson.
Investigations revealed that the Speaker was impeached Monday September 30, over pressure mounted on him by leadership of PDP to balance political equation ahead of the November 16 Bayelsa State Governorship election.
Our Bayelsa State Correspondent reports that there are 23 members in the State House of Assembly and 18 of them allegedly voted for the Speaker’s impeachment.
The member representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 2 in the House, Hon. Monday Bubou Edwin Obolo, has emerged as the new Speaker.
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly is made up of 18 PDP members and 4 APC members.
Meanwhile, the controversially impeached Speaker, Hon. Tonye Isenah, has insisted that he remains Speaker of the House, after successfully presiding over the plenary and announced recess for the Assembly.
Isenah, who was said to have succumbed to Governor Seriake Dickson's directive to resign his position today, said he successfully presided over the sitting and announced the recess for the Assembly, and was escorted out by Sergeant of Arm, adding that any member who sit back to do anything acted illegally.
He said: “I went to the House, all members entered the chambers for our sitting, after addressing the House, as the Presiding Officer, I announced the recess, so the House is on recess”.
