Kogi NMA to resume suspended strike

The Kogi State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA is to resume the two weeks suspended strike due to the failure of government to meet their demands despite assurance from government after stakeholders’ intervention, Our Kogi State Correspondent reports.

NMA on May 13, 2017 instructed their members to go back to work as a mark of honour to major key stakeholders in the State, such as: the Attah of Igala HRM Micheal Ameh Oboni II, Chairman Kogi State House Committee on Health, Dr. Friday Alih, the NMA National President, Prof. Mike Ogirima and the Medical Elders who pleaded with the association to call off their strike to enable them intervene between Kogi State government and NMA.

According to a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Godwin Tijani, the union held an emergency Congress June 3 in Lokoja which led to the decision for the entire doctors to resume strike as their demands was ignored by the State Government.

“It is really unfortunate that we have found our self in this mess. We respected all the stakeholders who wanted the progress of Kogi State Health Sector, but the State Government is giving deaf ear to our demands. We have had several promises of salary alerts for the past 1 week without success. Consequently upon this, the Kogi State NMA hereby directs all its members to resume strike from 12 mid-night Monday June 5”, Dr. Godwin stated.

Amongst their demands are: reinstatement and payment of the salary and arrears of doctors employed, payment of salary of doctors cleared and correction and payment of  arrears of doctors underpaid as well as the implementaion of corrected CONMESS and relativity.
