The Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has charged the Buhari adminstration to restructure the Nigeria Police Force with a view to removing bad eggs, alleging that cases of violation of human rights by some members of the force, especially by way of extortion of motorists on Nigerian roads ,undue torture and detention of suspects is on the increase.
Chairman of CDHR, Delta State, Prince Kehinde Taiga who gave the charge during a jaw-jaw with Our Delta Central Correspondent Thursday September 14 at his office in Warri, Delta State, enjoined President Buhari to suspend the Inspector General of Police, IGP for allegedly being among the bad eggs in the Police force.
According to him, it is against the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria for the police to obtain statement from suspects under duress by way of torture, adding that suspects should write statement at the police station in the presence of two of his/ her family members or a legal practitioner.
The rights’ activist averred that suspects must not be detained more than twenty-four hours as doing so is against the constitution.
Comrade Prince Taiga said that if the federal government is sincere about fighting corruption, it should be holistic and those caught should be prosecuted and jailed, no matter the position (s) they occupy, saying it will serve as deterrent to others.
