UNESCO Mother Language Day: Dons to x-ray survival of Itsekiri Language

Two University Dons, Prof. Tony Afejuku and Dr. Jackson Ireyefoju are expected to speak on the theme, “The Survival of Itsekiri Language, parents are key”, as part of activities lined up by Itsekiri Resource Centre, IRC to mark this year’s International Mother Tongue Language Day, established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.

The event which is slated for 10:00am Wednesday February 21 at the Olu Palace, (Aghofen) Warri in Delta State, will be graced by the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli, while the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, Chief Ayirimi Emami will deliver the welcome speech.

According to a statement by secretary of Itsekiri Resource Centre, IRC, Jemine Amorighoye, the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Michael Tidi, the Chief Inspector of Education for Warri South Local Government Area, Mrs. Ojumah Clementina and Mrs. Gbubemi Kpenosen-Ikolo, will deliver keynote remarks, even as the Chairman of IRC, Hon. David A.O. Johnson is billed to kick-start the colourful ceremony with a leading remark.

The statement noted that the paper shall be delivered in Itsekiri language through written and copies produced in English language.

The general theme for the 2018 International Mother Tongue Language Day is “Preserving Linguistic Diversity and Promoting Multilingualism to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SGD)”.
