Uduaghan blames maternal, child deaths on poverty, ignorance

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has attributed the cause of maternal and child deaths to poverty and ignorance.
Dr. Uduaghan made the assertion at the commissioning of the Maternal and Child Complex as well as other projects at the Central Hospital, Warri, Delta State Thursday February 13, 2014.

Governor Uduaghan, a former Commissioner for health in the state said the state government have been able to deal with the issue of poverty through the provision of medical facilities in the state health sector.

While calling on pregnant women to "conform to basic maternal rules and hygiene necessary for their safe delivery by not subjecting themselves to "quacks", Dr. Uduaghan who was also a former Secretary to Delta State Government stated that his administration is poised to tackle the level of ignorance of pregnant women who often visit trado-medical doctors for child birth.

He also advised pregnant women to always visit the maternal and child complex of the Central Hospital, Warri for family planning.

 

Chief Medical Director of Central Hospital, Warri, Mr. Kingsley Agholor in a remark said the old facilities in the hospital have not been abandoned, explaining that in 2008 a total of about 26,253 attendance was recorded a year after free maternal programme was introduced, while a 3,367 babies were delivered.

Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Sisanmi Otumara said the project is designed to save lives with tertiary level care. 

The former three -time Warri South Council boss also noted that the new  Delta State Ambulance Service is to cater specially for ‘traffic accident victims’, adding that 8 hospitals: including Central Hospital, Warri, Agbarho, Ughelli, Eku, Sapele, Agbor and Asaba have been selected for the purpose.
