Passengers travelling for business and other commuters are counting their losses as robbers in an early morning raid on the Bomadi-Ohoro road carted away cash, cell phones and other valuables belonging to them.
The vehicle belonging to the Delta State Urban Mass Transport Scheme plying the Bomadi-Ughelli route set off for Ughelli at about 6:45 am on the fateful day when it ran into the gang of robbers who ambushed unsuspecting passengers.
An eye witness disclosed that the robbers numbering over 15 jumped out of the bush where they had laid ambush at the Ode bridge section of the road, which has a stream and fired several shots sporadically into the air forcing the driver of the vehicle to stop.
While some of the passengers who had no cash on them received severe beating from the gun butt of the robbers. The driver of the vehicle, Mr. Lucky Omaraye explained that the robbers were armed to the teeth and were not in a hurry to ransack their victims and disposed them of their valuables including cash.
It was learnt that the robbers after a successful operation without resistance from any security outfit escaped into the nearby bush believed to be their regular escape route. The incident which brings to three a series of robbery attacks on travelers was carried out on the same spot where they could also have the stream as an added advantage to increase their chances of escape after robberies.
Commuters plying the road now hold their heart in their mouth as robbery incidents have become a regular occurrence. A combine team of the Joint Task Force JTF was seen combing the scene of robbery and the nearby bushes for clues.
