A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stalwart in Oshimili North local government area of Delta State, Onowu Austin Onianwa, has adduced reasons why there is an increasing call by Deltans for Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to express his interest to contest the governorship seat of Delta State come 2015.
Onowu Onianwa, who spoke in Asaba during the week, noted that the clamour by different segments of Deltans, including individuals, groups and communities on Senator Okowa to run for the number one position in the State, was a pointer to his excellent performance in government and the good qualities he has continued to display both in his private and public life.
He pointed out that Okowa showed commitment and ability in the discharge of his duties and responsibilities right from his days as council secretary and chairman as well as commissioner in various ministries, adding that as Secretary to the Delta State Government, he proved himself an astute administrator.
"Currently, as a Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Delta North, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has created a record with his sponsorship of 12 bills within the time frame of 24 months in the red chamber of the National Assembly. These include the very important National Health Bill, which had been passed by the Senate. Two other bills he sponsored have equally gone through 3rd Reading. These are not mean achievements for a first timer especially against the backdrop that he was able to do this in less than two years as a lawmaker, “he explained.
Onowu Onianwa further explained that Senator Okowa has not only attracted numerous projects to Delta North, but that he continuously ensures the projects were adequately funded by the federal government.
According to him, "Senator Okowa has continuously ensured the funding of the 18 kilometre Ugiliamai-Ogume Road and the multi-billion naira Otor bridge Illah-Ebu road linking the Northern part of the country through Edo State to Asaba, Delta State. Further to this, is the construction work on the 6.5 kilometre Umuda/Akwu-Ofor roads/drains in Asaba, and the new Gynaecology/Orthopeadic complex in the premises of the Federal Medical Center, FMC, Asaba to boost health care delivery in the state.
"There are also water schemes in Ibrede (Ndokwa-East), Akoko-Unor (Ukwuani), Ejeme -Aniogor (Aniocha South), Abavo (Ika South), Okpanam (Oshimili North), Etua-Aniogor and Etua-Etiti, both in (Ndokwa-West),which have all been completed and have been put to use by benefiting communities."
Onowu Onianwa stated that all that he listed above were subject to verification by members of the public, as in his words, "we make bold to say that Distinguished Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is a man of action, and not mere talk. He is a promise keeper. We therefore, make a carrion call on our worthy son, a son Deltans are proud of, to come out and contest the Governorship of Delta State in 2015."
