BudgIT reports at least 316 duplicated capital projects worth N39.5bn in 2021 budget

A Civic Organization that applies technology to intersect citizens’ engagement with institutional improvement to facilitate societal change, BudgIT, says its investigation into the 2021 Federal budget, has revealed at-least 316 duplicated capital projects worth N39.5bn, with 115 of the duplicated projects occurring in the Ministry of Health.

The report was contained in a press statement released yesterday, Monday May 3, by the Communications Associate of BudgIT, Iyanu Fatoba.

While describing the revelation as very disturbing, “especially considering the health infrastructure deficit and the raging COVID-19 pandemic affecting Nigeria”, BudgIT, “observed that the little budgetary allocation provided to other sectors are plagued with various loopholes for leakages and theft for public funds.

“Even worse, agencies now receive allocations for capital projects they cannot execute. For Example, the National Agriculture Seed Council, has an allocation of N400m to construct solar street lights across all six geopolitical zones, while the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan in Oyo State got N 50m for the construction of street lights in Edo State.

“Nigeria is already haunted by a staggering N3.31tn debt servicing burden, which will wipe out nearly 41.63 of the projected N7.99tn 2012 revenue”.

Fresh Angle International can report that the CEO of BudgIT, Gabriel Okeowo, while reacting to the revelation, demanded budget reforms for resource optimization, urging the Federal Government to urgently block all loopholes in the budget creation and implementation process, some of which are highlighted in the recently released publication.

He posited that the Federal Government can maximize the little public fund left by blocking the leakage BudgIT has identified.
