Former President of Itsekiri National Youth Council, INYC, Comrade Esimaje Awani, says Itsekiri people will resist the perceived injustice, regarding the three percent proposed for host communities in the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB just passed by the National Assembly, NASS, with all legal instruments known to mankind.
Comrade Awani, who was miffed with the definition of host communities and ambiguity of the term, ‘frontier basins’, in the PIB awaiting harmonization by a Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives, stated: “The host community definition by the Senate to include the communities that have ordinary pipelines passing through their backyard, is not just barbaric, but lack academic comprehension and understanding”.
He emphasized: “They can as well come and possess all our communities to fulfill the dream of killing the demon as expressed by the Senate President, since the measurement of the nautical miles into the Ocean argument didn’t stand in the past.
“How do you give 3-10 to host communities? In-fact that is the most barbaric practice I have ever seen, since the creation of Heaven and Earth. As Itsekiri people, we are frowning at this”.
Awani challenged National Assembly to explain ‘Frontier Basins’ as a clause in the PIB: “Because the proposed law didn’t identify the frontier basins. A statement by the President in 2019, identified the frontier basins as Chad Basin, Gongola Basin, Anambra Basin, Sokoto Basin, Dahomey Basin, Bida Basin and Benue Trough”.
