The Children of Drivers and Fishermen Association, CODAFA of Warri Kingdom, has called on the Senator, Representing Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, James Manager, to support the Chief Thomas Ereyetomi sponsored Bill, seeking the establishment of a Federal Institute of Fisheries Research, Ogidigben in Warri South –West Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement made available to Fresh Angle International this morning, Friday June 16, CODAFA, noted: “We wish to state that fishing being the major occupation of our forefathers in the Niger Delta, it is only reasonable and commonsensical for Senator James Manager and other Senators from the Niger Delta, to give this Bill the necessary support so it can be assented to by the President”.
The statement E-signed by the Chairman and Publicity Secretary of CODAFA, Fisherman Engr. Eyeoyibo Bawo Rubi Joe and Fisherman Toju Apoh, respectively, added: “Fishing is the major source of income for Countries like China, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia and these countries have the largest fishing industry in the world. Nigeria spend over N200billion for importation of fish yearly.
“With this institute our generation and future generation can tap into mechanised fishing and turned it into a major money spinning industry for the Niger Delta, and Nigeria.
“We wish to assure the Member Representing Warri Federal Constituency- Chief Thomas Ereyitomi and the Federal Government of Nigeria of the readiness of our Association to work in ensuring that this institute is established.
“We wish to also appeal to Ugborodo Community Leaders to make land for the institute ready ahead of the passage of the bill into law.
“Our parents were proud fishermen whose noble trade they used in training their Children and developed Warri Kingdom without involving themselves in embezzlement of community funds hence our resolve to support this bill and ensure the establishment of the Federal Institute of Fisheries Research becomes a reality in this 9th Assembly”.
