The 2014/2015 Barclays English Premier League, EPL is no doubt in its early stages and it is also too early to predict any possible winner, especially between current leaders, Chelsea and defending champions, Manchester City, but soccer pundits may not be wrong to suggest The Blues as strong contender following its early season display .
While much accolades is being heaped on Brazilian born Spanish International, Diego Costa for Chelsea’s obvious revival, not much is being said on how Chelsea’s gaffer and Portuguese born soccer tactician, Jose Mourinho identified the Blues’ weakness last season and subsequently consolidate on the team’s strength with the acquisition of a few quality players.
Jose Mourinho’s critics will not want to give any credit to him for the goal scoring prowess of Chelsea Spanish import, Diego Costa, no thanks to Costa’s exploits at Athletico Madrid in previous seasons. But the truth must be told that a world class striker in top form without a quality team and top-class tactical approach is bound to hit blank in many games. It is against this backdrop that reasonable credit should be given to Jose Mourinho for signing ex- Arsenal playmaker and Spanish International, Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in the summer.
Statistics show that most of Chelsea’s goals thus far this season are due to Fabregas’ assist and creativity. Mourinho having noticed the lack of creativity and connect between Chelsea’s industrious midfield last season and its average strikers, decided to buy Fabregas from Barcelona to fill the vacuum created by aging Frank Lampard and further went ahead to bring back Blues’ hero, Didier Drogba and French International, Loic Remy as cover-ups should the not-fully-fit Costa suffer major injury.
While Mourinho sharpened Chelsea’s attacking options, he equally added creative and flair players to the Blues wing play and consolidated on the team’s ever solid rear guard, just as he has so far instilled discipline and oneness which is vital for a team that went trophy-less last season.
With all these measures in place, only the star-studded defending Champions, Manchester City and old favourites, Manchester United can stop Chelsea from winning the current EPL title.
