Rotary has spent over 1billion dollars in tackling polio worldwide – Rotarian Akhigbe


The Rotary International Polio Plus Representative for DeltaState, Rotarian Emmanuel Akhigbe says Rotary International has spent over 1billion dollars in tackling polio scourge across the globe, adding that 14 cases of polio has beenrecorded in 2012 in the Northern part of Nigeria as against 8 cases recordedsame period across the country in 2011.

Rotarian Akhigbe made this disclosure recently in Warri duringthe second round flag off of immunization programme held at Ubeji health centre.He tasked parents to take advantage of the opportunity to immunize theirchildren of 0-5 years against polio and other childhood killer diseases.

The Head of Personnel Management, Warri South localgovernment council, Mr. James Kolo who was represented by Mrs. Ayemere Mariancommended Rotary Club of Ubeji for supporting the fight against polio andpromised to continually partner Rotary Club in the quest to eradicate polio inthe country.

President of Rotary Club of Ubeji, Rotarian EmmanuelAfinotan disclosed that Rotary Club of Ubeji runs a free clinic facility whichprovides anti-polio vaccine for babies in the area and enjoined mothers toeducate their peers on the need to immunize their babies against polio.

The state Technical Facilitator for Warri South, NaomiOgbakpah, the Warri South Council local Immunization Officer, Mary Fregene wereamong other medical officers who spoke at the flag off.

 Highpoint of theceremony was the administration of Oral polio vaccine to babies under 5 yearsby representative of the Warri South HPM, President of Rotary Club of Ubeji andother key health officials present.
