The Positives of 2015 Polls

While the winners are basking in the euphoria of their victory and the losers are licking their wounds both at the Federal as well as State levels ahead of the May 29, 2015 inauguration date for executive positions and June 2015 inauguration for legislators, there are positives right-thinking Nigerians need to take from the hugely contested polls.

One of such positives is the fact that even those who won elections, whether fairly or in controversial circumstances now know that the 2019 elections will not be a tea party, unless qualitative leadership/representation is given to the electorates. To put it simply, any political office holder that fails to perform creditably between May 29, 2015 and May 29, 2019 should forget about contesting for any position in 2019, because Nigerians are becoming more politically sensitive and rigging elections in 2019 will be pretty difficult.

Another factor that appeared to have played out in the just concluded polls is the fact that the era of manipulating Nigerians to get their votes with ethnic and religious sentiment would soon become a thing of the past, because candidates or aspirants’ personality and antecedents are coming to bear on who wins elections.

The thrust of this piece is anchored on the fact that credibility and antecedents of political contestants now holds the ace, these were virtues that swayed in favour of the President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari and not necessarily his party platform.
