71-year old Four Square Pastor assassinated in Benin

Tragedy struck members of Four Square Gospel Church in Benin City, Edo State when one of her Senior Pastor, Rev. David Memeh was shot twice to death at his G.R.A residence after the suspected assassins forcefully gained entrance into his residence, Our Benin City Correspondent reports.

According to the pastor’s wife, Deaconess Alice, the gunmen did not take anything from the residence except the cell phones of the victim.

Wife of the victim told newsmen that her husband begged the suspected assassins to take every belonging that he has and spare his life, but the assassins who were very angry slapped her husband severally before they shot him twice.

She said the killers broke into their apartment through the window in her husband's room, but her husband fled to her room, even as the skillful killers chased him and dragged him out of the wife’s room before they murdered him.

She said, "I ran out for them to kill me after I heard gunshots, but the killers had left. We were only three at home and they overpowered us. My husband is dead. I will appreciate if government arrests the killers."

Spokesman for the Edo Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwochei, could not be reached for comments.

A close source to the Church hierarchy in Benin who prefers anonymity said the deceased was a senior elder in the Church and left the Church some years ago to one of the reigning Pentecostal Churches before he came back, not long before he met his gruesome murder.

The close source also wondered why assassins would be after an old man of his age.

The story of the assassination is coming on the heels of intense cult rivalry which has claimed 16 lives in Edo State.
