The Catholic Bishop of Bomadi Vicariate, His Lordship, Dr. Hyacinth Egbebo weekend raised alarm over a devastating erosion wrecking havoc at the church cathedral water front in Bomadi, Delta State.
The Bishop, who expressed fears while conducting Our Bomadi Correspondent round the erosion scene, said the cathedral and two story-building under construction are in great danger and face imminent risk of being wiped away by ocean surge.
Our Bomadi Correspondent who was at the scene, reports that a large portion of the land measuring about 15 meters wide and 40 meters long has already been overtaken by ocean surge within the last two weeks, thus affecting the base of the jetty leading to the church.
The cleric bemoaned, “What I have to say is that I feel very very worried. Very worried because, to build anything here is very expensive. And now you can see, before it would come to the cathedral all these houses are threatened. And of course, you can see that this one is gone already from the verge of being washed away (sic). These buildings were put in when this had not happened, and we were not anticipating that this would have happened. Though, I hear that there was some kind of plan by the government to do foreshore wall here; and that has not happened. But suddenly, this happened, and we are feeling very worried. We pray that there should be some immediate intervention to stop this from further happening”.
The Catholic Bishop therefore appealed to the Federal and Delta State governments through the relevant agencies to promptly intervene to save the affected community from being washed away by erosion.
