A strategic move to sensitize Nigerians on the dangers of indiscriminate discharge of domestic and industrial waste in the environment, particularly against the backdrop of imminent flood alert by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency is being streamlined by a Non Governmental Organization, Safe Communities Support and Development Foundation, SCSD Foundation.

To fast-track the implementation of the initiative, a one-day conference/seminar with the theme “dangers of environmental pollution” has been scheduled for Thursday September 17, 2015 at NNPC Senior Staff Club, NNPC Housing Complex, Warri, Delta State.

President/CEO, SCSD Foundation, Mr. Alfred Ugharami in a statement issued in Warri, explained that  part of his organization’s policy framework is “to help communities across the country build the capacity and resources they need to mount coordinated, collaborative programmes designed to reduce the pain and cost of injury (as it affects indiscriminate dumping of waste) and promote a culture of safety for all residents”.

The statement noted that the Director of Engineering, Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Dr. Kevin Ikponmwosa Idehen and the HOD, Civil Engineering, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, Bayelsa State, Prof. Ife K. Adewumi will deliver lecture on the seminar theme with a view to kick-starting a long term programme that will lead to the designation of communities in Nigeria as ‘National Safe Communities’ after demonstrating that they have developed the capacity to address their injury challenges.

The Delta State Commissioner for Environment and other key stakeholders are expected to participate in the conference seminar.
