Delta Assembly Tribunal upholds Abigor’s victory over Card Reader controversy
Hon. Godwin Toritseju Abigor

The Delta State House of Assembly Tribunal sitting at Asaba, the State Capital has upheld the election of Hon. Godwin Toritseju Abigor, the Social Democratic Party, SDP candidate for Warri South Constituency I on the ground that “Card Reader is not yet law”.

The three-man tribunal led by Umar Mohammed gave the judgment after listening to the petition brought before it by the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate for Warri South Constituency I, Barr. Robinson Ariyo.

Barr. ARiyo in a swift reaction to the judgment, vowed to head to Appeal Court and declared, “I thank the Panel for its industry and hard work. I applied for the judgment and study it, I will certainly want to know the legal status of Card Reader print out. And it is only a Supervisory Court in this instance, the Court of Appeal that can throw a bright light on this”.

Some political watchers while expressing their thoughts on the tribunal judgment opined that it was a sign that the much awaited Delta State Gubernatorial Tribunal may follow the same line to give judgment in favour of Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, whose votes exceeded the number of persons accredited by Card Reader in the State governorship poll.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC led by its immediate past Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega had instructed that only Card Readers be used in the April 11, 2015 Governorship/House of Assembly polls, insisting that where Card Reader failed to work, the poll should be shifted to the following day.

A close confidant of Barr. Robinson Ariyo had told Fresh Angle International after one of the Tribunal sittings that his Principal, Barr. Ariyo won the election in Units/Wards where accredited voters according to Card Readers tallied with figures at INEC data base in Abuja.

The Delta State House of Assembly Tribunal had earlier given judgment in favour of Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Monday Igbuya against Mr. Felix Anirah of the APC for Sapele Constituency, even though the Speaker’s Counsel in his final brief allegedly prayed the Tribunal to declare rerun in most parts of Sapele Constituency.
