Breaking: President Buhari appoints Mahmud Yakubu as new INEC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmud Yakubu as new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The appointment was confirmed at the emergency Council of State meeting held October 21, 2015 by the President.

Yakubu is a Professor of Political History and International Studies. He was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, an expert in Guerrilla Warfare, Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, and was part of the team at last year's national conference.

Sokoko State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, said the appointment of the new INEC boss was in line with relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.

The appointment was consequently approve at the first meeting of the Council of State presided over by President Buhari. Five new National Commissioners have been named for the Commission.

The Commissioners are: Amina Zakari (North West) Dr. Anthonia Okoosi Simbine (North Central) Baba Shettima Afro (North East) Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (South South) and Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (South West).
