Breaking: NNPC clean-up of burst pipeline triggers deadly inferno in Delta
Huge smoke from the raging inferno

About three weeks after fire broke out from a pipeline near the Military Barracks in Effurun, Delta State, destroying properties running into tens of millions, a fresh fire at about 10:00am Friday December 4 broke out near the popular Spare Parts Market in Effurun, completely razing down several vehicles, mechanic workshops, saw mill, building materials, provision shops and valuables estimated to be over 100 million naira.

Unlike the incident near the Military Barrack which was reportedly caused by a man along the Mami Market who purportedly set fire on dry grasses in his premises, which had over-flow of crude oil from the same pipeline track, the incident which broke out Friday December 4 near the Effurun Spare Parts Market was allegedly caused by excavation work carried out by Officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

Eye witnesses told Our Senior Correspondent at the scene of the raging fire that the inferno started when an NNPC excavator came to carry out clean-up at the crude pipeline which suffered leakage Wednesday December 2, 2015.

According to the witnesses, it was during the excavation work that a rust pipeline sparked off and triggered a huge fire outbreak.

Despite efforts by the fire service of the NNPC, Nigeria Gas Company, NGC, NPDC and other concerned stakeholders, the fire was still raging at about 4:00pm when this report was filed and the incident had led to a massive gridlock, blocking entrance to Effurun and Warri from Sapele axis.
