A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Institute of Fisheries Research, Ogidigben in Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State, which was sponsored by the member representing Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief (Dr.) Thomas Ereyitomi, on Tuesday December 13, passed third reading during plenary.
Our Senior Correspondent reports that if the Bill eventually becomes an Act, it will enhance Fishery Research, Education and Cooperative Training in Nigeria and make comprehensive provisions for due management and administration of related matters.
Chief. Ereyitomi, reportedly explained that the choice of Ogidigben as location for the proposed institution, was due to its proximity to other coastal communities within Warri Federal Constituency and neighbouring states.
The Federal Lawmaker, had Wednesday July 14, 2021, during plenary, stressed that the coastal communities within Warri Federal Constituency, produce over 30 percent of Nigeria’s economic mainstay, but have very little or nothing to show in terms of government presence.
Accrding to Chief Ereyitomi, Fishery contributes about three to five percent of what Agriculture adds to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He posited that reports from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, revealed that Nigeria spent 97 Billion Naira on fish importation in 2010 and in the analysis of major food imports obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics, fish was the second major food commodity with the highest import Bill, between the year 2006 and 2010.
