I remain in ACN despite the party’s choice of Akeredolu, Senate Committee Chair, Boroffice declares
Prof. Boroffice

As the Ondo governorship election draws near, one of the gubernatorial aspirants under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Prof. Robert Ajayi Boroffice says he remains a committed member of the party despite the party's choice of former President of Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu as its gubernatorial candidate.

Addressing journalists in Akure after a meeting with members of the Boroffice Campaign Organization and supporters drawn from the 18 local government areas of the state, Prof. Boroffice who is the senator  representing Ondo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, called on all his supporters to put the past behind and support Akeredolu.

According to him, the interest of the party is bigger than that of any individual, even as he maintained that he has no regret.
The Akoko-born politician who doubles as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology expressed optimism that the party would emerge victorious in the forthcoming governorship election slated for October 20, 2012.

Akeredolu, he emphasized, “has become a symbol of ACN in this gubernatorial election. Even if he is not a politician, we will make a politician out of him so that we can win this election. And I believe that if they all agree to support the party, we are going to win this election. But I have my fears because when I was going round doing some research and investigations, the general opinion was that they were not going to vote for him. But after this meeting, I am now very optimistic that ACN is going to win this election.”

On what happens to the Akoko Agenda, he pointed out that “Akoko Agenda is not ephemeral, it will always be alive. Akoko Agenda is not only for gubernatorial election; it is the interest of Akoko. Whatever concerns the interest of Akoko is Akoko Agenda.”

He went on, “I have no regret because in life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But when you have faith in God, you believe that everything work together for good for those who love Him and trust Him. I have absolute trust in God and I love God because He first loves me. So I believe that everything is working for good for me, according to the Bible. Before this incident, the rating of ACN was 52 per cent. And we thought that after the announcement of the candidate, it will soar up to about 70 per cent towards the election. But now we have a setback. We have to wait and find out what is the opinion poll. But definitely, the opinion poll has gone down but with this type of exercise, we need to assure our people again that what we are doing is the right thing. And with that again, I think the opinion poll will go up and knowing full well that some of us that are aspirants are remaining within ACN; so I think the situation is right.”

Our Ondo State Correspondent however reports that the event took a twist when the factional Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Hon. Kunle Odidi stormed the venue and pleaded with the senator to retrace his step and return to the LP, which he helped to build.
Odidi averred that since Boroffice benefitted from the current crisis rocking LP which led to his defection from the party, he shouldn’t hesitate to return like the Biblical Prodigal Son.

Divergent opinions were aired by members and supporters drawn from the 18 local government areas of the state. While some opined that the senator pitches his tent with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, others suggested he defects to another political party to realize his gubernatorial ambition, just as some maintained that they will respect the senator’s decision and stay with him, irrespective of his choice of party.
On his part, Mr. Segun Odidi submitted that the senator remain in ACN and work with Akeredolu since the common interest of all members in the party is to dislodge the incumbent governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, in the forthcoming poll.
