Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called on the Minister of energy to involve the people at the rural level in the maintenance of solar system by training them.
Dr. Uduaghan made the call at Nelrose Hotel Asaba in Delta State,
While declaring open A-3-day national training workshop on applications of renewable energy devices and climate change mitigation for rural women, farmers and amnesty youths.
According to the governor, “you don’t need a School Cert or PHD holder to maintain a solar system. If the rural people are involved in the process, it will create job opportunities for them, energy sufficiency, good climate, good environment, food and wealth”.
Governor Uduaghan who described the process of getting energy as damaging to our immediate environment and inconveniencing also advised the members of Jatropher Growers, Processors and Exporters Association, JAGPEA, to identify different types of renewable energy.
Special Adviser to the President on energy matters, Prof. A.S. Sambo said the energy supply in the country is inadequate.
Prof. Sambo who was represented by the Director on renewable energy at the Energy Commission, Prof. E.J. Bala posited that if the nation must grow then it must improve on the supply of energy.
According to him, out of 11,000 megawatts of energy available in the country, the nation has only exploited 2,000 megawatts. Prof. Bala who identified challenges militating against energy generation and supply to include lack of political will, inadequate legal instrument, lack of renewable energy support and supply, noted that there are available opportunities to always exploit and improve on the development of the nation.
He called for the strengthening of the national energy policy to establish renewable energy through active private partnership.
Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Ita Okon Bassey Ewa declared the ministry’s support for renewable energy in Nigeria. The Minister who was represented by Mrs. Uchenna Chukwu made the declaration shortly after inaugurating Delta State Chapter of Jatropher Growers , Processors and Exporters Association.
Those inaugurated as members are :Roman Otite, Chairman, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Emerhi, Vice Chairman, Chidi Nwuko, Secretary, Oji Irikefe Odiri, Assistant Secretary, Tony Amaete, Treasurer, Dr. Rim Akpofure, Auditor, Chief George Osiokorobi, Technical Adviser, Jefasi Arobi, Financial Secretary, Prosper Efe Umukoro, Public Relations Officer and Endurance Queker, Assistant Technical Adviser.
Highpoint of the event was the signing of memorandum of understanding between Delta State government and Energy Commission of Nigeria. Professor E.J. Bala signed for Energy Commission of Nigeria, while Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan signed on behalf of Delta State government.
