Killing of Usman Buda: AI accuses FG of creating environment for brutality

The Amnesty International, AI, has accused the Federal Government of creating permissive environment for brutality, Fresh Angle International, can report.

The accusation by AI, came on the heels of the reported killing of Usman Buda, Sunday June 25, at a market in Sokoto, over alleged blasphemy.

Premium Times, had reported that an irate mob in Sokoto, yesterday killed a butcher, Usman Buda, after he was accused of making blasphemous comments against Prophet Muhammad.

The incident occurred at the Sokoto metropolis abattoir around 10:00 am.

According to Premium Times, a witness, who only gave his name as Aliyu, said on phone that Mr. Buda made blasphemous comment and repeated it three times when confronted by some of the people present.

“My brother was at the abattoir when it occurred. When Usman (Mr. Buda) insulted the Prophet, some people said he had mental issues, but most of those around him, who were his business friends, said he was never known to have any mental issues”, Aliyu, reportedly stated.

In a reaction to the worrisome development, AI, strongly condemned the killing of Usman Buda, urging the Nigerian authorities to immediately investigate the horrifying incident and ensure that those suspected of being responsible, are brought justice.

“The alarming uptick in blasphemy killings and accusations underscores the urgency with which the authorities must wake up to Nigeria’s international legal obligations to respect and protect human rights, including freedom of religion, opinion and expression. #Sokoto #Blasphemy

“By failing again and again to ensure that those suspected of responsibility of killing(s) over alleged blasphemy are brought to justice, the Nigerian authorities continue to create a permissive environment for brutality”, Amnesty International, averred yesterday.
