Delta IGR dips further as Marine & Dredging firm relocates

Business

Following persistent insecurity in the Niger Delta region, especially in Warri, Delta State, the Nigerian West Minister Dredging and Marine Company, NWMDM has relocated to Lagos State with all her major equipment moved to Julius Berger Yard, investigation by Fresh Angle International reveals.

The relocation was said to have been completed a few days ago with their sprawling premises now a shadow of its former self, coupled with the resultant retrenchment of employees, creation of idle local contractors, catering vendors and sacked casual workers.

Our Correspondent reports that some of the company’s key equipment has been demobilized to their main office site at Gbaraun in Bayelsa State. The company operated in Warri for quite a reasonable number of years.

Insider Sources disclosed that what is left in the sprawling premises are: insignificant materials and equipment just to retain or maintain their ownership and presence, pending when the company management may decide otherwise.

Authoritative sources revealed that some staffers of the oil servicing company have been paid their final emolument for disengagement, while a few others prefer to remain as well as endure the hardship at home and collect whatever stipend the company can afford in the meantime.

The NWMDM has been a major player in the oil and gas business in Delta State, handling key marine and dredging jobs for oil majors like SPDC and NNPC, AGIP and others until recently when the business became unprofitable, following the resurgence of militancy and insecurity of lives, loss of heavy duty equipment as well as other capital intensive properties that has led to low patronage from both the oil majors and the state government.

Residents of Merogun Area of Warri, host to the company are the worst hit as they no longer enjoy the privilege of un-interrupted power supply hitherto provided by the company.

They appealed to militants creating havoc in the State to have a rethink as the suffering from their activities is affecting everyone, even as the state Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, is set to drop further.
