Haiti: Nortreus concerns about next leaders; says Accord must be renewed

Haitian politician Werley Nortreus has raised his concern about Haiti's next leaders and possible long-term development.

He has also called for the UN-approved MSS mission, constitution reform, and elections in the troubled Caribbean nation.

Nortreus said the Haitian government along with political actors should probably renew the 2022 December Accord for another year to accomplish all the steps.

Nortreus also said that if the nation is not ready yet for elections at the current moment, it is necessary to renew the 2022 December Accord and communicate to add more leaders to the Transition Council to amend the current constitution and then organize a general election.

"I am confused about Haiti's next leaders and a possible long-term development. I am calling for the renewal of the 2022 December Accord to accomplish all the steps. The UN Security Council and the Kenyan Parliament approved the MSS mission, which is a sign of hope. Now, we hope the High Court of Kenya approves it. The next steps must be constitution reform and a general election. Suppose the nation is not ready for a general election at the moment or upcoming months. In that case, the Haitian government should add more leaders to the board of the transition council to amend the current constitution and then organize a general election by the end of this year or next year. I want everyone to know that I am still trying to get my proposed amendments included in the constitution reform that the Govt plans to organize", Haitian politician Nortreus said about the nation's next leaders on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

It's unclear who the nation's next leaders are because of no constitutional reform and a general election. Some citizens said the agreement signed by the Haitian Gov and others has expired. It's unclear what will happen on Feb 2024 and the upcoming months. No information regarding the next leaders yet.

Earlier last year, Nortreus said he was considering going to his home country in the hope of meeting with Haitian leaders and members of the population who are interested in deciding the nation's next leaders. Sadly, his constitution amendment campaign got a small number of signatures and no direct dialogue from Haitian leaders. He still hopes to go to his home country for political purposes.

Not enough signatures and no dialogue made it hard for him to be involved in deciding the next leaders. As a result, he temporarily closed his petition. He closed the petition campaign but he still urged the UN to send an international intervention to disarm the gangs and accomplices. He might re-open the petition just in case.
