Declare State of emergency on Water, sanitation- Activist tells Kogi Government

The Executive Director, Conscience For Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, CHRCR, Comrade Idris Miliki  has advocated the need for a more proactive and result oriented sanitation policy in Kogi State.

Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that Idris Miliki Abdul made the call in a statement in Lokoja, Kogi State capital.

He said the review of the sanitation policy under the new administration of Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo became imperative to reflect the current challenges of mass movement of daily traffic passing through the State capital causing environmental issues by human attitude due to negligence of basic hygiene.

“Lokoja the state headquarters host various market and motor parks, but the environment situation in those places is worrisome, as they are unkept. We are also worried, it seems there is no demarcation between the Sanitation Board and the company expected to clean Lokoja Town. As in many occasions, the government vehicles are been used by private company engaged to clean the city”. He stressed.

He decried the unavailability of potable water in Kogi State, particularly in Lokoja that host both river Niger and Benue, adding that, the issue of open defecation is on the increase in the State capital and across the state.

” Refuse  are scattered across the town, without the evacuation as at when due, worst of all is the refuses dump sites which have remain unkept without proper management”.

He called for the declaration of State of Emergency on water and sanitation in Kogi State, without further delay as well as recommend, specific date for cleaning markets, motor parks, relaxation centres and public spaces which according to him could not be done on the same day across board.

Miliki, equally called for a stakeholders conference on environment sanitation in Kogi state that will generate ideals on how to move this all important sector forward.
