The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ has threatened to take legal action against the DSS over perceived unconstitutional detention of Publisher of the Policy Magazine, Mr. Friday Ogungbemi, Our Kogi State Correspondent reports.
NUJ says the action will be taken against the DSS with a view to enforcing the fundamental human rights of the incarcerated journalist as well as claim damages.
This was part of the communiqué issued by the Union at an emergency Congress in Lokoja.
After deliberating exhaustively on the arrest and detention of Mr. Friday Ogungbemi over an alleged offensive publication, the Kogi State Council Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Ali Atabor in a communiqué noted with dismay the ordeals of the publisher as well as the psychological trauma being experienced by the family members as well as his colleagues.
The NUJ viewed the detention of Mr. Friday Ogungbemi who was arrested Wednesday November 30 at his residence in Lokoja as an affront to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 1948 United Nations Human Right Charter.
The Congress also considered the action of the law enforcement agents as an attempt to thwart the effort of the NUJ in the State as well as muzzle the press in the society, noting that any aggrieved person has options available to him or her to explore rather than unwarranted arrest.
NUJ unanimously adopted a motion to stage a peaceful protest to relevant stakeholders to press for the release of Ogungbemi.
