According to Dr. Osiatuma, the Federal Government through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant, Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, started constructing the Mother and Child Hospital in Ugbuwangue in the year 2020 and it was completed and commissioned in 2023, “but unfortunately, after commissioning it was locked up.”

The MD of FMC, Asaba, Dr. Osiatuma, added: “We've been given the marching order to revive the project and put the place to use. The whole idea of building the hospital, is to ensure that the people of Warri South, have a feel of proper tertiary care.
“The facility was built to be an 80-bed hospital, fully equipped and efficient, on getting there to resume work, we realized that it had been vandalized. Armored cables, television sets, the solar energy system and a couple of other equipment were tampered with and some stolen. But at least, 90% of the equipment are still there.
“We started last month to clean up the facility, put security, gardeners and cleaners in place and appointed Dr. Akpowaye Akpomiemie to head the hospital. Dr. Akpowaye Akpomiemie, is a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist. He will see to the running of the hospital, going forward. We also got a Chief Matron for the place, who is currently supervising the ongoing cleanups.
“We have deployed some key staff from FMC Asaba, for key positions for the time being. We felt we could not start operating without coming to inform you (Warri South Council HPM) as the owners of the community.
“We intend that by the 29th of this month, the facility would start to see patients officially. It’s a Mother and Child Hospital, but hopefully, we will expand and accommodate other things. As you know, Federal Medical Center, is a teaching institution, so we will be sending in Consultants, Dietitians, Surgeons of all kinds, Physicians, Gynecologists etc.
“We will also try to include the facility in our rotations, so that we can have interns practice there as well and keep the place running, just as it is in the FMC. We train all sorts of Medical Personnel and Doctors at the FMC, Dietitians, Surgeons, Nephrologists etc. We will rotate them through the facility. The goal is to ensure that the same quality and class is brought here and patients receive the same care as it is at the FMC Asaba.
“The place becomes a referral, so that when other hospitals and health centers need extra help, we can be there. And if we need them, they can also be there for us. We appeal and strongly solicit for your (Warri South Council) support so that staff may feel at home and perform at their best, while serving the community.”
The Warri South Council Head of Personnel Management, Mr. Augustine Akaeze, in his response, noted: “It is gladdening news that you are here to assist us. As you've asked for our support, we will also talk about our cooperation, because we actually need each other.

“Before the end of the tenure of the immediate past Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area (Dr. Michael Tidi) we commissioned a cottage hospital in one of our communities and we have been battling with inadequate personnel. Your coming is indeed a relief to that effect.
“Your recognition is high appreciated. It is good you came to let us know that you are starting something that will be of help to our communities. We are ready to do something that impacts the society positively.”
