Cult groups have been employed by some journalists in Edo State to forcefully seize and retain power after the State election of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ failed to hold for the third consecutive time.
Our Benin City Correspondent reports that trouble started when election was postponed from July 28th to August 8 due to petitions by most of the contestants over fake certificates, but was again postponed to 29th of August to create room for the disqualification of a chairmanship opposition candidate with a view to returning the incumbent chairman without election.
Fresh Angle gathered that as a result of the development, the NUJ National Secretariat in Abuja delegated the Zonal Vice President of Zone F South/South, U.S.A Uzaka and the Secretary, Eddy Ogude to proffer solution but they could not conduct a credible election and went ahead to constitute a five-man caretaker committee. The decision by the National delegate to constitute a caretaker committee further deepened the crisis, leaving several journalists injured and some properties in the state secretariat of the union were damaged.
It was also learnt that after constituting the five-man caretaker committee at Benin Motel Plaza opposite the NUJ secretariat, the officers came to the NUJ conference hall with fierce looking cultists who forcefully gained entrance to the NUJ premises and unleashed terror. At least three journalists were seriously injured, while one of the alleged cultists who were caught was severely beaten before security personnel rescued him.
