Soldiers stop Delta government’s multi- billion naira Ogheye market project
State of work at the project site



Soldiers allegedly acting on the orders of one Lt. Col. P.O.A Okoye have stopped  work at the Delta State government sponsored multi billion naira Ogheye Ultra Modern Floating Market in Warri North local government  area.

Attempt by top officials of the State government , including Special Project Director assigned to oversee the realization of the over 3billion naira project , Rt. Hon. J.F.K. Omatsone to inspect the progress of work on the site today was stopped, as an army personnel dressed in  camouflage refused the team from accessing the site without any explanation.

The Special Project Director and one time Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. J.F.K. Omatsone and Engr. Aghagba Solomon, a representative of the State Commissioner for Special Duties , Special Infrastructures, Mrs. Orezi Esievo had to divert the visiting team to the Community town hall to dialogue with the Elders.

Engr. Aghagba who is a Director of Special Infrastructure, expressed displeasure at the interruption of work at the project site  and commended the contractor for fully mobilizing to site.

Head (Olare-Aja) of Dimigun Community , Ogheye , Pa. Dennis Olubami demanded the removal of army personnel from the community, alleging that they kill their people and frustrate business as well as social activities in the area.

Managing Director/CEO of MAYBEDIK, the firm handling the project, Mr. Phillip Awani in an interview, stated that efforts to reach a compromise with the soldiers to allow his workers return to site have hit a brick-wall, with the army at Koko led by  Lt. Col. P.O.A. Okoye demanding that he pays five hundred thousand naira monthly for the period the project construction will last.

According to him, his company has lost over 25million naira for five days that work has been stopped on the site. Mr. Awani used the medium to thank Keystone Bank for financing the project as well as the Delta State government for putting so much faith on his company, promising that he will complete the project in good time.


Investigations reveal that the Ultra Modern Ogheye Floating Market which is 20 minutes drive on speed boat to neighbouring Ondo State is expected to accommodate a banking hall, fish processing unit and a police post when completed.
