Kogi Poly Rector Launches Sickle Cell Foundation

The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman has called for concerted efforts to fight against stigmatization of sickle cell carriers.

Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that Prof Salisu made the call while inaugurating the Shamsudeen Sickle Cell Foundation as part of activities to mark his 52nd Birthday anniversary in Lokoja on Sunday.

He called for aggressive awareness campaigns, adding that stigmatization of sickle cell carriers is more injurious than the disease itself.

Prof Salisu said that the Shamsudeen Sickle Cell Foundation would offer services such as medical support, counselling, scholarship, career services, nutrition and diet services, collaboration with donor agencies, general health promotion as well as advocacy and sensitization empowerment.

He said the vision of the Foundation is to ensure “a world where sickle cell warriors thrive, free from stigma, pains and limitations”.

He added that the mission is to change sickle cell narratives and conditions positively through care, support, counselling and and medical advancement.

Narrating his ordeal as a sickle cell carrier, 14 year-old Shamsudeen, after whom the Foundation is named, said living with sickle cell has been traumatic but expressed gratitude to his parents for their support and perseverance.

Born in May 2010, his first few months of life were filled with joy and hope, but at just six months old, he began experiencing persistent health issues that puzzled his parents. A grand celebration for his first birthday was followed by a period of acute illness, where he experienced swelling in his limbs – a painful marker that would soon lead to the diagnosis of sickle cell disease. Reflecting on this time, Shamsudeen recounted how his parents were devastated, yet undeterred, as his father made a vow to dedicate himself to ensuring that Usman received the best care possible.

Shamsudeen, who described himself as a proud sickle cell warrior, said the first six months of his life were filled with happiness as he was a healthy, bouncing baby boy.

“However, everything changed at six months when I fell ill for the first time. My parents assumed it was a typical baby illness, but as the months went on, I continued to fall sick.

“When I turned one, my parents threw a grand birthday celebration. But after the party, I fell seriously ill, and my limbs swelled. I was taken to a well-known hospital in Anyigba, where I was diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

“My parents were devastated, facing the unknown challenges ahead. In response, my father made a vow to give his all to ensure I would have the best care possible.

“The pain caused by sickle cell crises has been one of my most difficult struggles. I have endured excruciating pain, particularly in my chest, abdomen, and limbs.

“A type of crisis I faced, known as acute chest syndrome, even led to pneumonia, causing the most intense chest pain I have ever experienced.

“Both extreme heat and cold bring additional health issues, such as protozoan diseases like malaria or respiratory infections, which can lead to crises,” he explained.

Gifted with intelligence and a passion for learning, Shamsudeen has excelled academically and found particular inspiration in the subject of Biology, fueling his dream of one day becoming a neurosurgeon. 

Earlier, In an opening speech, the Chairman, Organising Committee, Hon. Abdullahi Bello appreciated God for adding another year to Prof. Salisu’s age.

He commended Prof Salisu for his great, positive impacts, legacy in the field of education which, according to him, had left great footprints in Kogi state Polytechnic and the field of educational institution in Kogi state.

He prayed to God to give the Rector more wisdom, understanding and sound health.

Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.Aliyu Yusuf Umar, who represented Governor Usman Ododo, congratulated Prof. Salisu on his birthday anniversary.

Prof. Ogbo Usman, indeed you are a great blessing to Kogi state and the people. You possess the skills for students’ global quality education. It is a clear indication of your mark of excellence and most distinguished Professor in your field.

“Today is a remarkable day of celebration as the governor rejoices with you. I wish you happy birthday anniversary as you celebrate today! My prayers for you is long life, prosperity and abundant blessings to you and your family, in the name of Almighty Allah, Amen!!,” he prayed.

The father of the day, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Mathew Alaji Opaluwa Oguche CFR, Ata Igala and President, Kogi State Council of Traditional Rulers, described Prof. Salisu as a dependable son and brother whose enduring contributions have solidified his position as Rector and strong pillar in the growth and progress of Kogi State.

He asserted that Prof. Ogbo Usman, is acknowledged as a relentless administrator and philanthropist, leaving an indelible mark through his generosity and benevolence, noting that these qualities have become synonymous with his engagement in both public and private spheres.

Ata Igala offered prayers for God to bestow continued good health and a sound mind upon him and sustain his impactful presence in the development and growth of quality education in the state.

In his lecture titled; “Towards Promoting a Robust Government-Citizens Relationship in Nigeria” Professor Hassan Saliu said the need to bridge the gap became imperative to engender trust between the government and the citizens.

Prof. Saliu said the disconnect was responsible for the low participation of the people in governance and electoral activities.
