State of Roads: Allegations against Umahi, nothing short of calumnious - Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has taken a swipe at Hon. Remi Oseni of the House of Representatives, describing the lawmaker’s remarks on the state of roads in the country under Sen. Dave Umahi, as “nothing short of calumnious and deeply irresponsible.”

Fresh Angle International understands that the federal lawmaker had expressed displeasure over the state of federal roads in the country, insinuating that the Minister for Works, Dave Umahi, was not doing enough to address the poor state of some federal roads across the country.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural body in an electronic statement released this afternoon, Monday October 28 by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said Honorable Oseni's remarks, lacked substantive evidence and intellectual rigor.

The statement, noted: “In a moment that calls for both clarity and civility, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost sociocultural organization representing the Igbo people, finds itself compelled to respond assertively to the recent allegations levied against Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, by Hon. Oseni of the House of Representatives.

“Honorable Oseni's remarks, lacking in both substantive evidence and intellectual rigor, have caused deep concern within the corridors of reason and fairness. It is crucial to highlight that a thorough investigation and an assessment of the real-world initiatives undertaken by Senator Umahi in his capacity as Minister have not only been overlooked but grossly misrepresented.

“Inheriting a litany of infrastructural challenges from the previous administration, President Bola Tinubu has faced the monumental task of repairing the nation's roadways, a challenge only compounded by limited fiscal resources. Yet, under Senator Umahi's stewardship, significant strides have been made in enhancing the quality of road infrastructure across the country. His unwavering commitment to addressing the endemic problem of bad roads is evident in the tangible improvements that have been achieved, despite the constraints of budgetary allocations.

“To suggest, as Hon. Oseni has, that Senator Umahi is lacking in his efforts is a disservice to the truth and the hard work being undertaken within the Ministry of Works. Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges Hon. Oseni, who represents the Ibarapa/Ido Federal Constituency in Oyo State, to exercise a level of decorum befitting his office, and to refrain from further disseminating unfounded detractions against the Minister. Instead, we implore him to join Senator Umahi on a tour of the ongoing projects nationwide. Such an initiative would grant him valuable insights into the Minister's strategic approach to road rehabilitation and improvement and would serve to illuminate the reality of the ongoing efforts to restore the nation’s crucial transportation arteries.

“Senator Umahi has not only flagged off landmark projects such as the Lagos to Sokoto Super Highway and the Lagos to Calabar Coastal Road, but he has also demonstrated a passionate commitment to completing these initiatives efficiently and to high standards. His extensive experience as a certified, practicing civil engineer provides him with a unique understanding of the mechanics of infrastructure development. His innovative strategies and meticulous oversight have positioned the country to benefit from a legacy of quality that could extend well beyond the term of his office, ensuring roads that will endure for over three decades.

“Such a decision is viewed as a significant boon for not only the Southeastern region but for all Nigerians who desire progress in infrastructure development. We stand firm in our resolve to protect the integrity of Senator Umahi from baseless attacks—his professionalism and commitment should not be undermined by mere rhetoric or sensationalism.

“It is incumbent upon the House of Representatives to foster a spirit of cooperation rather than engage in witch-hunts or slanderous campaigns. A respectful dialogue will yield far more constructive outcomes than baseless attacks. Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls upon all members of the House to engage with the Minister of Works with the respect and dignity his office warrants, facilitating meaningful dialogue that can address any concerns without recourse to empty accusations.

“Let it be boldly stated: Senator David Umahi is not merely a caretaker of contracts; he is an architect of transformation for Nigeria’s road infrastructure, deserving of our support and collaboration. Together, let us champion progress and accountability, steering clear of divisive rhetoric and focusing on our shared goal of national development.”
