Warri South: House Committee suspends revenue collection at McIver Market over litigation, multiple levies

The House Committee on Revenue in Warri South Local Government Council, has suspended the collection of revenue from traders at Mciver Market in Warri till further notice. 

 

 

 

The Chairman, House Committee on Revenue in Warri South Local Government Council Legislative Arm, Hon. ( Chief) Eghere Udumetotor, handed down the order Friday February 7, when he led other members of the committee to Mciver Market on oversight function.

Hon. Udumetotor, who was accompanied by other members of the committee such as Hon. Emmanuel Egbe, Hon. Jolomi Ojighoro, Hon. Monday Iriferi and Hon. Tuoyo Ebigbeyi, explained that the decision to order the suspension of revenue collection at the market, was anchored on a pending litigation and reports of multi levies slammed on the traders.

Whilst noting that Warri South Local Government Council Legislative Arm, operates in sync with the judiciary, Hon. Udumetotor, assured traders at the market that the necessary machineries would be put in place to ensure that the order is enforced from Monday February 10.

The Chairman of Mciver Market Men and Women Association, Mr. Stephen Amalili, had complained to members of the House Committee how traders in the market, are slammed with multiple levies by different individuals, especially on Mondays.

According to Mr. Amalili, some traders at the market are compelled to part with as much as six thousand naira each on Mondays alone.

Four traders at the market, including Mr. Innocent Awuze, Mr. Onyekachi and Mrs. Joy A., who spoke to the committee members, expressed their frustration with the multiple levies, pleading with the authorities of Warri South Local Government Council, to remedy the situation and save their businesses from collapse.
