The Rector, Kogi State Polytechnic, Prof Salisu Ogbo says his administration inherited an institution where cultists reigned supreme and are operating as demy-God on campus.
Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that Prof. Ogbo stated this on Monday in Lokoja at a press briefing making the end of his first tenure in office.
He disclosed that before his administration also came on board, Cultist were operating with impunity on campus and the neighborhood.
According to him, this and many other threatening social vices made the Polytechnic to be battling with deeply disturbing image issues bordering on negative press.
"There is a place one time in this institution called Pipe Line. It is usually a place where cultism strive on campus. We have also ban end of semester celebration. I would recall way back in Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba in 2014, a young Man drove recklessly celebrating end of semester examination which led to the amputation of a young Girl leg from Sociology Department. Cultism usually use this period to strike and cause chaos on campus.
"There was a Boy who was coming to write his final examination and was apprehended with a gun. Between May 2020 to January 2025, we have been able to avert
170 security threat through intelligent security network in the Polytechnic.
"Before we came on board, some Person will go to a nearby cyber cafe in town and print our statement of recent. We also have some bad eggs in the system who will be running National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programme concurrently. This is the height of criminality in our educational system"
He went further to state that his administration also ban the sale of textbooks on campus adding that, some Lecturers were forcing Students to buy their materials before they can pass examination.
Explaining further, Prof. Ogbo said: "Some Lecturers were making the sale of textbooks compulsory for our Students. I have copies of petition to National Board for Technical Education, NBTE against extortion of students by some Lecturers in the guise of selling textbooks.
"When you are selling textbooks to Students as a precondition for students to pass examination, that means they will not read. This can cause insecurity and tribal conflicts in the School. We have been able to sanitize the system by eradicating this on campus".
It could recalled that Prof. Ogbo was appointed as substantive Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic on
12th February 2021 by the then administration of former Governor Yahaya Bello and was reappointed in June, 2024 by Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo which will take effect from 12th February, 2025.
