The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has once again demonstrated its growing influence in global border security discussions. One of its senior officers, Assistant Comptroller of Customs (AC) Sanusi Saulawa, was prominently featured as a speaker at the 2025 World Border Security Week in Madrid, Spain.
The international summit, held from 25 to 27 March at the Hotel Eurostars Madrid Tower, focused on “Developing Border Strategies Through Cooperation and Technology”. It brought together border management experts, policy-makers, and stakeholders worldwide to deliberate on emerging security threats and technological solutions across land, air, and maritime borders.
AC Saulawa represented the NCS in a high-level panel of experts drawn from institutions such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP), European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), World Shipping Council (WSC), Ghana Immigration Service, Indian Coast Guard, and the UK's Counter-Terrorism and Border Protection Centre.
In his presentation, Saulawa highlighted the strategic reforms undertaken by the Nigeria Customs Service under the leadership of Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. He emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration, intelligence-led operations, and the deployment of technology in securing Nigeria’s borders and facilitating legitimate trade.
“The Nigeria Customs Service is not only strengthening its operational capacity at home but is also actively contributing to the global discourse on border security,” Saulawa stated.
World Border Security Week is a platform for nations to share best practices, foster collaboration, and explore innovations in response to rising transnational threats such as smuggling, human trafficking, and terrorism.
