NDDC Launches Sickle Cell Awareness Programme with SCAIIN

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Awareness Initiative Ireland–Nigeria (SCAIIN), has launched a sickle cell disease awareness programme at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt.

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, who was represented by the Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Dr Patience Ezugu, emphasised that sickle cell disease remains a major public health concern in Nigeria and across the Niger Delta region. She noted that the programme is designed to promote genotype awareness, improve access to screening, encourage stigma-free care, and support early diagnosis.

The Founder of SCAIIN, Esther Orolememe, commended the NDDC for its commitment to community health and urged intending couples to know their genotype and ensure compatibility as a preventive measure.

The initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to preventive healthcare and community-based health education across the Niger Delta.
