Flood Control: Work Commences At DLA/Jesus Saves Roads, Others

One primary social problem staring at the highly populated residents of Direct Labour Agency, DLA, Road, Jesus Saves Road, Agric Road and others in Asaba, Delta State capital over a decade is environment-related problem.

The rampaging impacts of flood water in these highly populated places in Asaba, constitute a major hindrance to socio-economic development of the areas, a fact, which also affects the tenancy patronage.

The giant underground drain project, the brain child of Chief James Ibori leadership, was allegedly abandoned over the years, but was reportedly revisited by Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan’s, administration, until Senator Ifeanyi Okowa government took the bull by its horn now.

Worried by the persistent environmental crisis occasioned by annual flooding of the affected areas, the State Governor, Senator Okowa promised to proffer solution to the environmental menace, last year.

Today, the ongoing drain project, which reportedly commenced last year, at Anwai Road, adjacent the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba, is a promise realized.

Good enough, the early commencement of the drain project from the discharge point, at Anwurinwu River, behind FMC, Asaba, is a wise decision, due to the swampy nature of the coastal area and to avoid the disruption of the work by rainfall.

With the ongoing work on the FMC axis and the subsequent ongoing clearing and evacuation of the accumulated filth from the abandoned drain project behind the Lion House, (off Nnebisi Road) and along the Amb. Leo Okogwu Street/ Jesus Saves Road, persons residing in the areas are full of enthusiasm to witness concrete solution to their humiliating plight unfolding.

The ongoing project, when completed, will address the menace of the annual flooding of the areas in the process; alleviate the suffering of the residents, motorists and address the plight of traders operating in the zone.

A more accessible DLA Road, Jesus Saves Road and other adjoining streets link/feeder roads, will also facilitate excellent communication system, which will curb, to a great extent, the traffic congestion problems at Nnebisi Road.

Over the years, due to the menace of flood water in these affected areas, tenancy patronage experienced embarrassing low proportion in the zone, especially between 2016/2017, as many tenants, reportedly shunned the beautiful residential apartments, while many also reportedly relocated for safety to better areas in Asaba.

However, the presence of functioning drainage systems, especially the ongoing giant one in the state capital, the environmental-related problems will be fully addressed.
