Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of Zion Nationale Newspaper, a community tabloid operating in the Niger Delta, Mr. Jude Obiememyego has raised alarm that younger cousin (name withheld) to a Niger Delta Governor has threatened to send him and his team to jail with the use of police as well as judicial connections.
Mr. Jude Obiememyego whose publication is well known for its hard stance on state and national issues, further alleged that the threat which came via a telephone call Saturday April 13 at about 12:51pm also revealed alleged plans “to kill him and his family and other journalists with the media house.”
According to him, since the telephone conversation, “a lot of warnings have been channeled to Zion Media team”, thus putting their lives in danger.
The journalist, Jude Obiememyego who is the National Treasurer of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, also explained in a statement made available to Fresh Angle via email that a fellow publisher of community newspaper once told him that he was advised to remind him (Jude) of how one of his co-publisher is currently languishing in a federal prisons as a result of government machineries.
The text message which Mr. Jude Obiememyego sent to the number that threatened him in response, reads in part, “thank you for your call, your comments are well noted, especially regarding that you have instructed to put me and my family in jail and that we shall be killed. I am a journalist working for the common good. But I think you spoke too soon. The management of Zion will continue from here and the Inspector General of Police and International Community must hear and the social media must work on your threat.” Adding, “I have informed the civil societies, international bodies about your threats. We are waiting for your actions, we are not afraid, Zion is for the people and not for corrupt government.”
Fresh Angle gathered that the management of Zion Nationale Newspaper has already informed the international communities and human rights organizations of the alleged threat.
