Sexually active persons at risk of cervical cancer, medical practitioner warns

A representative of Glaxo Smith Kline who is also a specialist on cervical cancer, Dr. Collins Obatan, says individuals who are sexually active as well as those with multiple sex partners are at risk of contacting cervical cancer.

Dr. Collins Obatan made this disclosure during a seminar organized by the Education Group Community Development Service, CDS, for the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, members of Aguata local government area, Anambra State.

While fielding questions from participants at the seminar, he said, “it is better you stay faithful, the moment you become sexually active then you are at the risk of contracting cervical cancer. And it is advisable you go for screening regularly. It is not wrong to be sexually active, we all have plans to settle down but we have to protect ourselves through screening and vaccination.”

While explaining that cervical cancer is caused by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus, HPV, he said the virus is not condition dependent on family history and that condom offers no protection. In his words, “cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix, the neck of the womb. And unlike some other cancers, it is not condition dependent on family history because it is caused by a viral infection related to a common virus called Human Papilloma Virus, HPV. This virus is caught during sexual activity including intimate skin-to-skin contact. Condoms don’t offer total protection.”

He further stated the symptoms of cervical cancer as bleeding in between period and a foul discharge from a woman’s private part. He added that the symptoms don’t show until the late stage of the cancer thus he advised regular screening and vaccination.

He disclosed that the vaccine is not free and that the dosage is taken thrice spread through a period of six months and each dose cost N5,500. He further revealed that there is a national immunization when the government provides the vaccine for the people.

Meanwhile, the President of Education CDS, Miss Tracy Omokuya, a Batch B Corp member of 2012/2013 set while thanking everyone who attended the seminar, advised the rest Corp members to do their duties always while she charged the Education CDS members to keep the flag flying.
