In a bid to tackle what it considers the biggest challenge confronting Delta State, the Delta State House of Assembly will soon enact rumour mongering law with a view to checking unfounded speculations that tends to cause disaffection among people of Delta State.
This much was disclosed by Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei at Asaba Thursday June 13 during a press briefing marking the second anniversary of Delta State 5th Assembly.
As part of strategy to check rumour mongering in the state, Hon. Ochei announced prize money for the best investigative medium in the state between now and the end of the year and tasked journalists practicing in the state to shun sensationalism and concentrate on factual reporting.
While promising that the state assembly is working towards making its business transparent, Hon. Ochei declared that members of the State House of Assembly cannot speak on matters under consideration in the House.
On the seeming controversy over the anti-kidnapping law recently passed by the State House of Assembly, the speaker explained that there’s no controversy between the executive and the legislature on the law, noting that it has been enrolled as law in the state since April 17, 2013 and that the State Attorney General has already averred that it will be implemented.
Hon. Ochei who stated that the governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has never had any issue with the House of Assembly, stressed that the demolition of houses used by kidnappers in the state is enshrined in the newly passed anti kidnapping law.
The Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Basil Ganagana, Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Omawumi Udoh were among principal officers of the State House of Assembly that attended the media parley which was preceded by a joint sitting of the State House of Assembly and members of Akwa-Ibom State House of Assembly.
