The people of Aja-Edede, an Itsekiri community in Escravos, Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State have distanced themselves from speculations that they threatened to scuttle moves by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to perform the Ground Breaking Ceremony of the $16billion EPZ cum Delta Gas City project.

In a statement issued in Warri on behalf of people of Aja-Edede, the community head, Pa. John Edede Yonwuren re-stated the displeasure of being left out in the recent peace resolution brokered by the Delta State Government between Gbaramatu and their Ugborodo brothers, insisting that “we are major stakeholders in the EPZ project, because a large mass of our land will accommodate the EPZ project as evident in the legacy project map and verifiable history”.

The statement stressed that contrary to reports, the Aja-Edede people are delighted that the project Ground Breaking Ceremony will soon be performed by President Goodluck Jonathan and adequate preparations have been put in place to ensure a grandeur ceremony.

Pa. John Edede Yonwuren noted that there is nothing like Adedegbene in Warri South-West Local Government Area as claimed by Sokebolou/Yokri people of Ogulagha in Burutu Local Government, stressing that no individual or ethnic group should change the name of Aja-Edede community to Adedegbene for economic interest.

The Aja-Edede people maintained that in as much as they will join other host communities and stakeholders to prepare the ground for a peaceful Ground Breaking Ceremony, they will pursue all civil and legal means to ascertain their legitimate and historical ownership of a large percentage of the land earmarked for the Delta Gas City project.

They warned all those planning to ferment trouble with a view to frustrating the Ground Breaking of the project by Mr. President to drop such evil plan and embrace the peace building process initiated by the Uduaghan led administration, even as they called on the Minister of Petroleum and the NNPC to incorporate them in all further consultations and deliberation regarding the Delta Gas City.
