The seeming communal strife in Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, Warri, which made one Gideon Okumagba who lost election to Cyril Eboh in the race for President of Okere-Urhobo Youth Development Movement and subsequently attempted to stop the inauguration of the youth body by dragging them to the Police Area Commander’s Office in Warri, appears to have taken a fresh dimension as some past political appointees and prominent youth leaders have accused Gideon Okumagba of staging crisis against the Kingdom.
In a statement christened “Re: No Communal crisis in Okere-Urhobo,” two former members of Warri South Local Government Council Transition Committee, Messrs Alex Eda and Ochuko Akporiaye, immediate past Chairman of Okere-Urhobo Community Development Committee, CDC, Mr. Emmanuel Eminokanju, George Eburu and Onome Egboro noted that Gideon Okumagba “is not a stakeholder or a Chief in the Kingdom and the land committee in which he claimed to be the Chairman was an illegal adhoc committee created to usurp the present legitimate management committee of the kingdom”.
While stressing that “ Okere-Urhobo Kingdom was created based on five families/communities namely: Olodi, Itifo, Makro, Ighogbadu and Oki”, through a law signed December 24, 1991 by “the then Military Administrator of Delta State, Group Captain Chijuba Ochulor and gazette by Delta State on January 14, 1992”, the Okere-Urhobo leaders quipped, “the Okpako Orere of the Kingdom is Pa. Dickson Eburu who is also a Chief, a Kingmaker and the Igede of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom”.
They advised “Gideon to seek a legitimate means of employment and stop causing problems in the community”, saying the actions of “Gideon and some few extortionists whose goal is to usurp the authority of the Kingdom as a whole”, has “led to various protests by the Okere-Urhobo community to Area Commander’s Office in Warri South”.
