Kogi Assembly extends LG Transition Committees’ tenure to April 2018
Governor Yahaya Bello

Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday November 8 extended the tenure of Transition Committees of the Local Government Councils in the State to April 2018, Fresh Angle International can report.

The extension is sequel to a letter sent to the House by the Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello, citing lack of funds, insecurity, among others as some reasons why the State cannot conduct Local Government election as captured in the 2017 budget.

The tenure of the local government transition committees expired November 5, 2017.

Deliberating on the matter on the  floor of the hallow chamber Wednesday  November 8, Hon. Kekere Sanni (APC Okehi) while supporting the request, said the reasons itemized by the executive were  enough to give an express passage to the request as the state has adopted principle of necessity.

John Abba (APC Ibaji constituency) reminded the house that N450million was captured for the conduct of local government election in 2017 budget, but wondered why the executive failed to adopt the resolution of the house when it first extended the committees’ tenure.

He called on the House to at all times promote, protect and fight for democracy since there is no substitution.

He advised the House that the six months extension should mean that within the period, elections should be conducted by State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) and a democratically elected council sworn in.
