Delta State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Omamofe Pirah says the leadership of Itsekiri Regional Development Committee, IRDC from inception has failed in the mandate to develop Itsekiri communities as well as build the people's capacity.
Hon. Pirah, the first substantive chairman of the Chevron established development agency, IRDC, made the declaration Tuesday January 30 in Udu near Warri, during the opening of an onboarding training for IRDC members organized by Chevron in collaboration with Participatory Partnerships for Community Development, PPCD.
While disclosing that he was among those that rejected the Austin Oniyesan leadership of IRDC and made same reservation known to the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli, Pirah challenged the Oniyesan executive to prove him wrong.
According to him, the task for the new Oniyesan leadership is to set the path for the development of Itsekiri Oil and Gas producing /impacted communities and it should start with the registration of IRDC with CAC.
He also challenged the IRDC executive to complete all ongoing projects, have special vehicle to deal with third parties, conduct annual general meetings and engage a qualified administrative officer and diversify IRDC funds.
He stressed that the Oniyesan leadership should invest the huge funds available to IRDC into productive investments after completing all ongoing projects, before embarking on new mega projects like canalization, shore protection and sand filling, even as he dealt extensively on the need to build capacity of Itsekiri people.
He advised the IRDC to take a serious look at the training school in Egbokodo with a view to partnering the institution for adequate capacity building of Itsekiris.
Chairman of IRDC, Amb. Austin Oniyesan, assured Hon. Pirah that his leadership will work in line with his advice.
He said his executive was set to embark on mega projects that will create about 500 jobs for indigenous Itsekiris.
