Delta NUJ controversial directive angers members
Comrade Michael Ikeogwu

Tongues are wagging among members of some chapels of the Delta State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ over a controversial directive by the Comrade Michael Ikeogwu leadership that permission must be granted by it before any chapel can embark on courtesy call or media parley outside Asaba.

The directive is a fallout of the state NUJ congress held Tuesday May 22 at Asaba, the state capital.

The state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu reportedly directed “that Chapels should not go beyond their coverage or jurisdiction on courtesy visits and media parley, especially those outside Asaba”.

Comments obtained from couple of whatsapp groups administered by some of the chapels, indicate growing anger by some of the practicing journalists, who are demanding to know the law that restricts their engagements with members of the public, particularly institutions and what is the basis for determining coverage or jurisdiction, whereas some of the chapels have their membership cutting across the 25 local government areas in the state.

If the directive is anything to go by, correspondents based outside Asaba can continue to attend Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s quarterly briefings in Asaba, but chapel leadership in other parts of the state can not engage institutions or organizations outside their areas of coverage, unless granted permission.
