NEMA Launches 2025 Flood Preparedness Campaign in Cross River State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officially flagged off its 2025 National Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) on June 6 in Calabar, Cross River State. The campaign aims to raise awareness, build community resilience, and strengthen disaster response efforts, especially in flood-prone areas.

The event began with a courtesy visit to the State Government, where the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony, pledged the state’s support to NEMA and SEMA in disaster mitigation efforts.

At the stakeholders' engagement session held at Metropolitan Hotel, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar (represented by Mr. Joseph Ugwu), emphasized the importance of grassroots sensitization and the dissemination of early warning signals to reduce disaster impact.

Presentations included an analysis of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook by Mr. Igue Terungwa of ACDRRO, who called for the establishment of functional Local Emergency Management Committees in all local government areas.

Stakeholders in attendance were the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Immigration Services, Nigerian Red Cross, Fire Services, Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, Waste Management Authority, Traditional Rulers, the Media, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the State Emergency Management Agency.

The campaign extended to Bakassi Community, identified as a high-risk flood area. Residents were educated on flood prevention strategies, witnessed practical simulations by the Fire Service, and received basic first aid training from the Nigerian Red Cross. A first aid box was donated to enhance local emergency response.
