The Zimbabwean government has expressed its readiness to learn the strategies Nigeria has deployed in surmounting the security challenges bedeviling it.
The commandant of the Zimbabwe National Defence College, Air Vice Marshal Michael Moyo who disclosed this during a visit by his delegation to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) stated that they were in Nigeria to learn from her experience in order to improve upon security system in their country.
Moyo commended the way Nigeria was able to contain its internal strife, adding that they had chosen Nigeria to create a learning platform in view of her security challenges and to understand the role government institutions play in enhancing national security.
“We are here to learn and get assistance on how you do things, how best we can improve on our programmes to help us move forward. We are taking so many things away from our visit to Nigeria. We are aware of the security challenges Nigeria is facing. It is much easier if you can identify the enemy but it poses bigger challenge if you don’t know who the enemy is.
“However, what I appreciate is how you curtailed the problem, but it will also be better if you can curtail it with another strategy. We believe you have done the right thing and that is the much we can learn from you,” he added.
In his speech, the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen Johnson Olawumi stated that the scheme has succeeded in bringing about national unity, integration and development after 40 years of its existence.
Olawumi stated that the country holds this achievement to the founding fathers of the scheme and others who have passed through the scheme and had worked hard to see it to where it was today.
‘’NYSC after 40 years have achieved a great deal in Nigeria. Every graduate that you see in the country passed through the scheme unless some who are in uniform because joining the army is considered a service to the country,’’ he said.
The Dg expressed the willingness of the scheme to render assistance to any government in African wanting to establish the scheme in their country adding that it has helped in assisting the government of Gabon to establish a scheme in the country.
Earlier, an Assistant Director in charge of Special Projects, Malam Muhammad Momoh who took the delegation through the vision and mission of NYSC, revealed that, no fewer than two million Nigerian graduates had passed through the scheme, since its inception in 1973.
