Itsekiri graduates across the world have cautioned the federal and state governments, political parties, groups and other stakeholders not to turn the issue of the Chibok missing school girls into another social jamboree, stressing that if the spate of organized protests and politicization of the abduction is not properly managed the girls may not be found.
In a press statement issued on behalf of Itsekiri graduates, the National President of National Association of Itsekiri Graduates, NAIG, Alero Naomi Tenumah, expressed fears that the conflicting figures regarding the actual number of girls abducted, the unusual silence of security agencies as well as the declaration of President Goodluck Jonathan regarding the where-about of the missing girls are issues that should call for deep reflection so as not to make the abduction another endless story that may cause the entire nation deep hole in the heart.
According to Tenumah, the porous nature of our territorial borders, particularly between Nigeria, Cameroun and Chad against the backdrop of state of emergency declared in Adamawa, Yobe and Bornu States is another aspect of the missing girls’ story that should bother Nigerians and the International Community.
NAIG called on the federal government to step up efforts in the areas of intelligence gathering and trusted synergy among security agencies in the country to ensure the rescue of the missing girls, rather than the on-going socio-politicization of what is “gradually becoming a National embarrassment”.
