Nigeria's Population to hit over 500 million by 2050, Prof. Aimakhu raises alarm


A Medical Expert and Secretary, Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Prof. Chris Aimakhu, has raised alarm, saying Nigeria's population would hit over 500 million by 2050, if urgent steps are not taken to address family planning and birth control measures by government.

                                                                                                                         

Prof. Aimakhu, raised the alarm Saturday July 3, during the 3rd Online Media training for Health reporters & feature writers organized by Rotary Action Group for Reproductive Maternal and Child Health, Nigeria, RMCH.

 

He suggested that one percent of Nigerian's consolidated revenue allocated to healthcare insurance scheme, should be made to support family planning.

 

Prof. Aimakhu, anchored his presentation on: "Analysis of Family Planning budget and state of contraceptive distribution logistics in Nigeria".

 

Prof. J.T Mutihir of Jo's University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, Jos, Plateau State, noted that family planning doesn't affect men’s sexual performance, adding that men are few action point on contraceptive usage, as more attention are given to women, but requires men synergical cooperation, in order to have more saner society.

 

While appealing to Journalists to join in the campaign for family planning news dissemination, another resource person at the event, Dr. Adewale Adeoye, disclosed that causes of infant mortality would be reduced, if thorough awareness is created.

 

In his paper presentation on day-three of the training, Prof. Oladapo  Shittu, who is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology as well as Provost, College of Medicine, University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State, pointed out that family planning prevents maternal deaths, helps to reduce poverty as well as increase social investment.

                                                                                                                                               

The National Director, Rotary Action Group for Reproductive Maternal and Child Health Nigeria, RMCH, Prof. Emmanuel Lufadeju, in his closing remarks, enjoined journalists and other media practitioners, to use simple terms in reporting family planning for easy comprehension.
